Privacy, terms & accessibility

Written plainly, on purpose.

This page is a working draft. Organizational, dues, legal-service, privacy and nonprofit compliance language must be approved by counsel before launch, including the entity type, charitable-solicitation registrations, and how dues are handled.

What Tenant Nexus is

Tenant Nexus is a tenant-led membership and organizing network. We publish general legal information, help renters document problems, and organize building-level campaigns.

We are not a law firm and we do not represent you. Reading this site, submitting a case, or joining as a member does not create an attorney-client relationship. We are not a labor union, we are not legal insurance, and a referral to a lawyer is not a promise that they will take your case.

Organizing support and legal representation are different services, and we label which one you are getting at every step.

Privacy: what we collect and why

We collect the account details you give us, the case details you choose to enter, and the files you upload to your evidence locker. Files are stored privately and opened through links that expire.

Your case file is visible to you. It is not visible to other members, other buildings, or organizers who are not assigned to it. We do not publish apartment numbers, member lists, votes, or case documents.

We minimize sensitive data. We do not ask for Social Security numbers, immigration status, or medical records, and we ask you not to upload identity documents. If a document is needed for a referral, you share it directly with that organization.

We never contact your landlord, a court, a regulator, or a journalist on your behalf. Every outward-facing communication requires your explicit review and authorization.

You may request an export or deletion of your data. Deletion is reviewed against retention and legal-hold obligations before it is carried out.

Terms of use

Use the service for your own housing situation or for someone you are helping with their knowledge. Do not upload another person’s private information without their consent.

Case plans are drafts assembled from published information and your own answers. Where a playbook has not been reviewed by a Virginia attorney, we say so plainly and the plan is general information plus a referral, not a legal conclusion, deadline calculation, or remedy.

Deadlines, notice requirements and delivery methods are determined by statute and by your lease. Verify anything time-sensitive with a lawyer or legal aid before acting.

Accessibility

We aim for WCAG 2.2 AA: readable type, large tap targets, keyboard-operable controls, labelled form fields, and no reliance on color alone to convey meaning.

Action plans can be printed so a tenant without reliable internet can carry the plan to a meeting, an inspector, or a court self-help desk.

If something here is unusable with your assistive technology, tell us and we will fix it.

Membership and dues

Dues pay for organizers, rule review, and the software behind the case desk. Safety information, court-date triage and referrals never require payment.

Membership fees are not charitable donations and are not deductible as charitable contributions. Whether dues are treated differently by your employer or a benefits program is a question for your own advisor.

Proposed pilot prices are shown on the membership page. They are not an approved price list, and no payment is collected while the pilot is free.
